Welcome back to the Refresh Series- a series of posts to refresh and encourage us in motherhood- whether we are in the middle of one season or beginning a new one.
We can’t do all the things all the time, and I’m sure we have all felt the longing to be able to do more or different things than our life or season currently allows. However, we can choose to focus on things that bring us and our family joy in this season, and to work toward cultivating a life of love and contentment whatever our life stage.
You should have some ideas of some focuses for the next few months from the focus setting post, but the challenging part can be turning those wonderful aims and areas to focus on into tangible steps (and actually doing them).
Remember to make sure that they are out somewhere visible- on my calendar page for the month is the perfect space for this. (Calendars are actually on sale right now, and the perfect way to keep yourself grounded year long.) Having them somewhere that you can walk by each day and have a reminder of what you’ve decided is most important to you right now is really encouraging.
Step 9 – create action steps
These can be simple- like text a friend each Friday (to invite them over for dinner), or change where the plates are kept (to help little ones to put things away themselves). Try and think of the practical things that can be done to help you all with the focuses you’ve chosen.
It helps to think through:
- Are there things I need to schedule into my life and make time for? How can I do that? It might be going to an exercise class or making a new slot in the day to read books with your little ones.
- Are there habits I want to work on cultivating? If there are things you’re likely to forget initially, set reminders on your phone or put notes up somewhere helpful in the house where you’ll see them.
- How can I make sure I’m giving myself a bit of breathing room? Where can I add self care things into our day to day, and make sure I’m refreshed?
Step 10- write it down, remind yourself, do it!
Whatever your actions steps were, if it’s something you can put in your calendar, diary or set a repeating reminder for, do it now. If you want to remember to phone someone each Saturday, it’s fine to set yourself a reminder until you don’t need it any more! If you want to go out to something with a friend in the evening, text your friend, choose your date/ venue and commit to it.
- Add one off events to your calendar or diary so that you don’t forget
- Set reminders for repeating things you need to remember
- Have conversations with those around you so you’re all on the same page
Sharing your focuses and plans with other will also keep you more accountable to them than if it’s only you. Talk to your children about what you’d like to work on together, share your bucket list (or make it together). The more you involve others the more you’re living life intentionally together.
Digging deep into our season, setting focuses and taking action to make sure we are prioritising the right things, taking some breathing room for ourselves and working out how best to love others takes effort but I hope you’ll agree that it’s worth it. Hopefully you’re feeling refreshed and ready for whatever this season of motherhood brings. Do share the series with your friends, and tag a mama you want to encourage here .
If you want more space to get things out of your head and onto paper when it comes to motherhood and life and all the things- why not get The Mama Book while it’s on sale and make sure you’ve got some mental space for the rest of the year. There are four season refresh sections, big picture pages to help you dig into who you are as a person and how you can apply that to motherhood, and weekly spreads to help you count the joys, tackle challenges and remember what you’re learning on this journey. See the videos here for more info!
The final step which I haven’t actually numbered is to give yourself grace, and remember all the wonderful things that are happening here and now in your life, as you live it with your little ones. Perfect isn’t possible, but you are doing an amazing job as you do your best to love your people and yourself.
Grab a calendar (on sale!) to keep your focuses, self care priorities and joy front and centre as you go about your days. Our year long journals are also on sale at the moment and don’t forget your free shipping code – FREESHIP for free UK postage.
